Mª Dolores Rodríguez Frías public outreach talk on Cosmic Radiation

The Severo Ochoa visiting proffessor Mª Dolores Rodríguez Frías will give a public talk entitled "Cosmic Radiation: messenger of the primal and unknown universe" on April 10th at the Casino de La Laguna.

Start date: 10 April, 2014 - 20:00
End date: 10 April, 2014 - 21:00
Location: Casino de La Laguna, La Laguna,Tenerife.
Organizer: Casino de La Laguna

The Cosmos is sending us information through extremely high-energy particles, which are impossible to capture with conventional telescopes. Cosmic rays, gamma rays or high-energy neutrinos help us to better understand how the universe works and open windows to new mysteries and discoveries. This relatively new field that studies the universe through new messengers, is called Astroparticle Physics. The Physics of Cosmic Radiation is one of the pillars of astroparticle physics and a fundamental tool in the study and knowledge of the primal and unknown Universe.

Dr. Rodríguez Frías will talk, among others, about EUSO (Extreme Universe Space Observatory) mission, the first space mission in this field, with strong international participation : Japan, Russia, USA and Europe, where Spain is involved. This project will be located in the International Space Station (ISS) and has been designed to investigate the origin and nature of cosmic rays of extremely high energy ( EHECR , E> 1019 eV ). This space mission will detect the higher energy range ever observed from space.

Dr. M. D. Rodriguez Frias is proffessor on Atomic, Molecular and Nuclear Physics at the Universidad de Alcalá de Henares (Spain). Her main scientific interests are focussed on Astroparticle Physics, mainly Ultra-High and Extremely High Energy Cosmic Rays from Earth and Space. She is currently coordinating the Spanish contribution to the EUSO telescope and she is the Spanish representative in the Executive Committee of this Space Mission. Moreover she is the PI of the Spanish contribution (the infrared camera) to EUSO-BALLOON (CNES), a stratospheric balloon that will be launched from Timmins (Canada) in September 2014.
