Abstract:

I will discuss recent development in low noise amplifiers for astrophysical applications. I will describe the fundamental quantum limits of linear amplifiers and then I will show how a promising new class of amplifiers - superconducting parametric amplifiers - might be able to (apparently) violate the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle.
