Meeting of the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer consortium in La Palma

Santa Cruz de La Palma will host a debate on the results obtained by this high-energy instrument in recent years and will add a fourth star in the Science Stars Walk (Paseo de las Estrellas de la Ciencia) in honour of the Physics Nobel Laureate Samuel Ting. The AMS consortium is formed by over 50 countries, including  Spain, which is represented by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC), Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence, and the Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas Medioambientales y Tecnológicas (CIEMAT).

Presentation of the Severo Ochoa Centers and María de Maeztu Units Alliance (SOMMa)

SOMMa gathers centers and units that have the Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu excellence recognitions in Spain and that are among the best in the world in their respective scientific areas.

The objectives of SOMMa and a global vision of the achievements of Spanish science will be presented. Likewise, the representatives of SOMMa, with the support of other agents of the science and innovation sector, will claim the priority role that science must have to promote the economic and social progress of the country, and they will demand urgent and lasting measures to address some of the problems that currently constrain the Spanish research system.

The participants of the event will be:

  • Carmen Vela, State Secretary of R&D&I.
  • Teresa Garcia-Milà, Vice-president of SOMMa and Director of the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics (BGSE);
  • Luis Serrano, President of SOMMa and Director of the Centro de Regulación Genómica (CRG)

VI Spanish Meeting of Solar and Heliospheric Physics

From today until Thursday 22 June, 45 Spanish specialists in the study of the Sun, among whom are IAC researcher staff, meet at the University of Extremadura to discuss the role of this Community in the international sphere, especially from the point of view of research infrastructures, as well as the strategic position of the Canarian Observatories for the installation of large solar telescopes.
